Shed Installation and Repair

A shed is only as good as the way it is put up. Built on uneven ground or a poor base, even a good shed will twist, let in water and rot from the floor up. We assemble and install the shed you have bought on a proper, level base, and we repair existing sheds, from a leaking felt roof to a rotten floor or a door that will not close.

Shed installation and repair is part of our conservatories and outbuildings service. If you want a shed made to measure for your space, see our garden shed construction service.

01Installation

Our Shed Installation Service

  • Checking the delivery: We check that all the panels, fixings and roof parts are there and undamaged before we start.
  • Preparing the ground: Clearing, levelling and laying the right base for the size of shed and the ground.
  • Assembly: Floor, wall panels, roof and door, fixed square and level, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Roofing: Fitting the roof felt or other covering supplied, with neat, sealed edges and trims.
  • Windows and doors: Glazing fitted, doors hung and adjusted, and locks or hasps fitted.
  • Fixing down: Securing the shed to its base so it cannot move in high winds.
  • Treatment: Applying a timber treatment where the manufacturer recommends it after assembly.

We assemble flat-pack sheds, pent and apex sheds, workshops, bike stores and storage units from most suppliers.

02Base

What Base Do I Need for a Shed?

The base must be firm, level and sized to the shed so that rainwater runs away rather than pooling under the walls. The main options are:

BaseBest forNotes
Concrete slabLarger sheds, workshops and heavy storageVery solid and long-lasting. Typically around 100 mm of concrete on a compacted sub-base
Paving slabsSmall and medium sheds on reasonably level groundLaid on a compacted sub-base and levelled
Timber frame baseSloping ground, or where concrete is not wantedTreated bearers on pads or ground screws, raised for airflow
Plastic grid baseSmall sheds on firm, level groundFilled with gravel; quick and free-draining

Whatever the base, the shed floor should sit on bearers so air can circulate underneath and the floor stays dry. We recommend the right base at the survey.

03Repairs

Shed Repairs

  • Roofs: Replacing torn or perished roof felt, fitting a new rubber EPDM roof, or replacing rotten roof boards.
  • Floors: Replacing soft or rotten floorboards and bearers.
  • Walls and cladding: Replacing split or rotten boards and resealing gaps.
  • Doors and windows: Rehanging dropped doors, new hinges, hasps and locks, and replacement glazing.
  • Levelling: Lifting and re-levelling a shed that has sunk or twisted, and fixing or replacing the base.
  • Treatment and painting: Cleaning and re-treating the timber, or painting it in the colour you choose.

We tell you honestly when a repair is worth it and when a new shed is better value.

04Roof repair

Can a Shed Roof Be Repaired?

Usually, yes. Small tears in felt can be patched, but on an older shed it is normally better to strip the old felt and fit a new covering over the whole roof. The choice is:

  • Shed felt: The standard covering, nailed and sealed at the edges. It is the lowest-cost option.
  • EPDM rubber roof: A single sheet of rubber membrane with no joints. It is more durable than felt and suits flat and low-pitch pent roofs.

If the roof boards underneath are soft or rotten, we replace them first so the new covering has a sound base.

05Planning

Do I Need Planning Permission for a Shed?

Usually not, for a house. Most garden sheds fall within permitted development if the shed is single storey, not in front of the house, and no more than 2.5 metres high when within 2 metres of a boundary. It must be used for storage or other purposes incidental to the house. Flats, listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 areas have extra controls. Sheds under 15 square metres of floor area do not normally need building regulations approval. For the full rules, see our conservatories and outbuildings page.

06Power

Power and Lighting in a Shed

If you want lights, sockets or power for tools in your shed, we run a suitable cable from the house and fit a separate supply with RCD protection, certified through our domestic electrical installation service.

10FAQs

Shed Installation FAQs

Ask a different question
Q01

How much does shed installation cost?

It depends on the size and type of shed, whether a base is needed, site clearance, access and any extras such as treatment or electrics. We give you a written quote after seeing the shed and the space.

Q02

What base do I need for a shed?

A firm, level base sized to the shed: a concrete slab for larger or heavier sheds, paving slabs for most small and medium sheds, or a timber frame base on sloping ground. The floor should sit on bearers for airflow.

Q03

Can a shed roof be repaired?

Usually, yes. Small tears can be patched, but an older roof is best stripped and recovered with new felt or an EPDM rubber membrane, after replacing any rotten boards.

Q04

Do I need planning permission for a shed?

Usually not, for a house, if it is single storey, not in front of the house, no more than 2.5 metres high within 2 metres of a boundary, and used for storage or other incidental uses.

Q05

Can you assemble a shed I have bought online?

Yes. We assemble flat-pack sheds from most suppliers, check the parts first, and fit them on a proper, level base.

Q06

Can you move or re-level an existing shed?

Yes. We can lift and re-level a shed that has sunk, lay a new base, or move a shed to a new position in the garden if it is sound enough to move.
