Central Heating Installation
A heating system is only as good as its design: comfort and running costs depend as much on radiator sizes, pipework and controls as on the boiler. Our central heating installation service designs and fits a complete new central heating system: for a home that has never had one, a full central heating system replacement when the old one is past saving, or a new system for an extension, conversion or new build.
Central heating installation is part of our plumbing services. As central heating installers who are also builders, we plan the pipe routes, lift and relay the floors, and make good afterwards.

01What a system includes
What Is Included in a New Central Heating System?
Most UK homes have a "wet" system: a heat source warms water, and a pump circulates it to radiators or underfloor heating. A full installation covers:
- The heat source: Usually a gas boiler, fitted through our boiler installation service by Gas Safe registered engineers, as the law requires. A heat pump is the main low-carbon alternative.
- Pipework: Flow and return pipes to every room, sized for the heat each room needs.
- Emitters: Radiators sized room by room through our radiator installation and replacement service, or underfloor heating installation in kitchens, extensions and bathrooms. Many homes use both.
- Hot water: Either instantly from a combi boiler, or from a hot water cylinder heated by the system.
- Controls: A programmer or smart thermostat, room thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves, through our thermostat and heating control installation service.
- Protection: A magnetic filter on the return pipe and inhibitor in the water to slow corrosion and sludge.
02System types
What Type of Central Heating Is Best?
There is no single best type. The right choice depends on how many bathrooms you have, how much hot water you use at once, your mains water pressure and the space available.
| System | How hot water is provided | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Combi boiler | Heated on demand; no cylinder or loft tanks | Flats and smaller homes with one bathroom |
| System boiler with unvented cylinder | Stored at mains pressure in a cylinder | Homes with two or more bathrooms and good mains pressure |
| Regular boiler with vented cylinder | Stored in a cylinder, fed from a tank in the loft | Homes with low mains pressure, or keeping an existing layout |
| Heat pump with cylinder | Stored in a cylinder, heated by the heat pump | Well-insulated homes, extensions and new builds, ideally with larger radiators or underfloor heating |
An unvented cylinder must be fitted by someone qualified to install one under the building regulations. Heat pumps work best at lower water temperatures, so radiators and pipework are sized for that from the start. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England offers a grant towards a heat pump.
03Design and heat loss
Designing the System: Heat Loss and Sizing
First we work out the heat loss of each room: the heat it loses through walls, windows, floor, roof and ventilation. That figure sets the output of each radiator or underfloor zone, the size of the boiler or heat pump, and the size of the pipes.
Getting this right avoids cold rooms with undersized radiators, and an oversized boiler that switches on and off constantly. The building regulations also expect new heating systems to be designed so that they can run efficiently at lower flow temperatures where practical, which suits both condensing boilers and heat pumps.
04Pipework
Can You Install Central Heating Without Lifting Floors?
Partly, but most installations lift some floorboards. Pipes have to reach every radiator, and the neatest and most efficient route is usually under the floor or through ceiling voids. The options are:
- Under suspended timber floors: Boards are lifted along the pipe runs, and flexible plastic pipe can often be threaded through the joists with fewer boards lifted.
- Through the ceiling below: For upper floors, pipes can drop from the loft or run in ceiling voids.
- On the surface: Neat surface-mounted pipes along skirting boards, boxed in where needed. Useful on solid concrete floors.
Typical pipe sizes are 22 mm for main runs and 15 mm to radiators. Copper and plastic both have their place, as our pipework installation and repair page explains. Because we are builders, lifted floors are relaid and any wall chases are made good.
05Regulations
Building Regulations, Commissioning and Certificates
Installing a new heating appliance is notifiable building work, either through a competent person scheme or a building notice; for a gas boiler, the Gas Safe registered engineer who fits it normally notifies building control. The system must also meet the energy efficiency rules, including suitable time and temperature controls.
At the end, the system is flushed, filled with inhibitor in line with BS 7593 (the standard for system water treatment), balanced and commissioned. You receive the Benchmark commissioning checklist and the building regulations compliance certificate. If you are replacing an old system and keeping some of it, our power flushing service cleans the parts that stay.

The heat source
Combi, system or regular boiler, or a heat pump.

Hot water
Whether a cylinder is needed, and what type.
- 04
Pipe routes
Suspended or solid floors, and how much needs lifting and making good.
- 05
Emitters
Standard, column or designer radiators, or underfloor heating.
- 06
Controls
A basic programmer, smart thermostat or room-by-room zoning.
- 07
Removing the old system, including old tanks and back boilers.
The timing also depends on these factors, and on whether you are living in the home. Fitting a system during a renovation is quicker because the floors are already up. We confirm the timing when we quote.

How It Works
For upkeep once the system is running, see our central heating system maintenance service.
- 01
Survey
We measure each room and check the gas supply, water pressure and flue positions.
- 02
Design and quote
Heat loss, emitter sizes, pipe routes and controls, in a written quote.
- 03
First fix
Floors are lifted and pipework is run. In a renovation, this is done before plastering.
- 04
Heat source and hot water
The boiler or heat pump, and any cylinder, are installed.
- 05
Second fix
Radiators, valves and controls are fitted.
- 06
Commission and hand over
The system is flushed, filled, balanced and tested, and we show you how to use the controls.

09FAQs
Central Heating Installation FAQs
How much does a new central heating system cost?
It depends on the size of the home, the heat source, whether a cylinder is needed, the pipe routes, the radiators and the controls. We give you a written, itemised quote after a survey.
How long does it take to install central heating?
It depends on the size of the home, the floors, whether a cylinder is added and whether you are living there. We plan the work to keep you without heating for as short a time as possible and confirm the timing when we quote.
Can you install central heating without lifting floors?
Partly. Pipes can run through ceiling voids or along the surface, and flexible pipe reduces the number of boards lifted, but most installations lift some floorboards. We relay them and make good afterwards.
What type of central heating is best?
It depends on your hot water use, number of bathrooms, mains pressure and space. A combi suits smaller homes, a system boiler with a cylinder suits larger homes, and a heat pump suits well-insulated homes.
Can I keep my existing radiators?
Sometimes, if they are in good condition and the right size for each room. Old, undersized or corroded radiators are usually better replaced.
Do I need building regulations approval for a new heating system?
A new heating appliance is notifiable building work. For a gas boiler, the Gas Safe registered engineer who fits it normally notifies building control, and you receive a compliance certificate.
