Radiator Installation and Replacement
Our radiator installation service covers new radiator fitting in rooms that have never had one, radiator replacement where the old one is worn out or the wrong size, and moving radiators to suit a new layout. Our radiator fitters size each radiator to the room, fit new valves and leave the system refilled, protected and balanced.
Radiator installation is part of our plumbing services. If you are planning a complete new heating system, see our central heating system installation service.

01Types
Types of Radiator We Fit
| Radiator type | What it is | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Panel radiator | Steel panels, single or double, with or without convector fins behind | The most common type. Double panels give more heat from the same wall area |
| Column radiator | Vertical steel or cast iron columns, in two, three or more rows | Suits period homes. Heavy cast iron models need a sound wall or floor-standing feet |
| Designer radiator | Flat-panel, tubular or sculpted styles in steel or aluminium | Some styles give less heat than a plain panel of the same size |
| Vertical radiator | Tall and narrow | Useful where wall space under windows is limited |
| Heated towel rail | A ladder or designer rail for bathrooms and kitchens | Gives less heat than a radiator of the same size. Can be dual fuel (see below) |
A towel rail on the central heating only warms up when the heating is on. A dual-fuel rail adds an electric element so it can be used in summer. The element needs a suitable electrical supply, installed through our domestic electrical installation service and certified through one of the routes the building regulations allow; bathroom electrical zones apply.
02Sizing
What Size Radiator Do I Need?
The right size depends on the room's heat loss, not just its floor area. Radiator output is listed in watts or BTU (British thermal units). To size a radiator properly, we look at:
- The room: Floor area and ceiling height.
- Heat loss: The number of outside walls, the size and type of windows, insulation, and whether the room is above an unheated space.
- How warm the room should be: Living rooms and bathrooms are usually kept warmer than bedrooms and hallways.
- The flow temperature of your system: Manufacturers typically quote output at a high water temperature (known as ΔT50). If your boiler runs cooler, for better efficiency, or you plan a heat pump, the real output is lower and a larger radiator is needed.
Online BTU calculators give a rough starting point; for a whole house, a room-by-room heat loss calculation is more reliable. We will tell you if a room needs a bigger radiator or a second one.
03Replacement
Replacing a Radiator
Radiator replacement is the simplest version of the job when the new radiator has the same pipe centres (the distance between the two valves) as the old one, so the existing pipes line up. If the new radiator is wider, narrower or a different style, we adjust the pipework or use extension tails so the valves line up neatly.
Replace rather than repair when a radiator has pinhole leaks from internal corrosion, is too small for the room, or is cold in places even after it has been flushed. If the problem is a single fault, such as a stuck valve, a cold top or a leaking spindle, our radiator maintenance and repair service may save you a new radiator. If several radiators are cold at the bottom, the system may need power flushing before new radiators go in, so they are not filled with old sludge.
04Valves
Valves and Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)
Every new radiator is fitted with new valves. Normally that means a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) at one end, which controls the temperature of that room, and a lockshield valve at the other, used to balance the system. The room with the main room thermostat, often the hallway, is usually fitted with a manual valve instead of a TRV, so the two controls do not work against each other.
You can choose standard TRVs, or smart TRVs that set a schedule for each room from an app. These are installed through our thermostat and heating control installation service.
05Moving
Can You Move a Radiator?
Yes. Moving a radiator means extending or rerouting the flow and return pipes to the new position:
- Along the same wall: Usually a short extension of the pipes under the floorboards.
- To another wall: The pipes may run under a suspended timber floor, or be chased into the wall or boxed in where the floor is solid concrete.
- During a renovation or extension: The best time, as pipes can be run before floors and walls are finished, as part of a full house renovation or house extension.
Narrow microbore pipework can limit how much heat a larger radiator gives, so we check pipe sizes first. Any channels or holes are made good afterwards, and our painting service can finish the wall.
06Positioning
Where Should a Radiator Go?
Radiators are traditionally fitted under windows to counter cold draughts, which still suits older homes; well-insulated rooms give more freedom. Avoid positions where sofas, beds or long curtains will block the heat, and check the wall can take the weight, especially for column and cast iron radiators on stud walls, which may need extra timber supports.
07Cost
How Much Does It Cost to Fit a New Radiator?
We give you a written quote, and for a defined job such as a like-for-like replacement we can usually give a fixed price. The main factors are:

New position or replacement
A new radiator needs new pipework; a like-for-like swap usually does not.

Its size, style and material, and whether you are supplying it.
- 03
Pipework changes
Different pipe centres, moving the radiator, or solid floors.
- 04

Standard, thermostatic or smart TRVs.
- 05
Draining down
Most jobs need the system partly or fully drained and refilled with inhibitor.

08Process
How It Works
Planned before we start, managed by one project manager, signed off at the end.
- 01
Survey and quote
We check the rooms, pipework and radiator sizes, and send a written quote.
- 02
Drain down
The system is drained, fully or partly, and the old radiator removed.
- 03
Fit
Brackets are fixed, pipework is adjusted and the new radiator and valves are connected.
- 04
Refill and protect
The system is refilled, inhibitor is added to protect against corrosion, and air is bled out.
- 05
Test and balance
We check every joint for leaks and balance the radiators so they heat evenly.

10FAQs
Radiator Installation FAQs
How much does it cost to fit a new radiator?
It depends on whether new pipework is needed, the radiator's size and style, the valves, draining down and making good. We give you a written quote, and a fixed price for defined jobs.
How much does it cost to replace a radiator?
A like-for-like swap with the same pipe centres is the simplest job; a different size or style, or extra pipework, adds to it. We quote after seeing photos.
What size radiator do I need?
It depends on the room's heat loss: its size, outside walls, windows, insulation and the temperature your system runs at. We size each radiator to the room, in watts or BTU.
Can you move a radiator?
Yes. The pipes are extended or rerouted to the new position, under the floor or in the wall. It is easiest during a renovation, before floors and walls are finished.
Can I replace a radiator with a bigger one?
Usually, yes, as long as there is wall space and the pipework can supply it. The valves may need repositioning if the pipe centres change.
Will I need a heat pump-ready radiator?
If you plan a heat pump, your radiators will run cooler, so some may need to be larger. We can size new radiators for a lower flow temperature now, so they do not need replacing later.
