Picture Hanging Service and Shelf Fitting

Moving into a new home or finishing a room usually leaves a pile of things waiting to go on the walls. Our picture hanging service puts up pictures, photos and artwork level and evenly spaced, and our shelf fitting service fixes shelves that stay straight under the load you put on them. It is a wall hanging service for the items that make a house feel lived in, using fixings that suit both the item and the wall.

Hanging and fitting is part of our handyman services.

01What we hang

What We Hang and Fit

  • Pictures and photo frames: Single pictures, pairs and groups, hung level and at a consistent height.
  • Artwork hanging: Framed prints, canvases and heavier framed pieces, with hangers suited to the weight.
  • Gallery walls: Groups of frames planned and hung as one arrangement.
  • Shelves: Floating shelves, bracket shelves, alcove shelves and twin-slot rail shelving.
  • Other wall-mounted items: Such as coat hooks and hook rails.

Curtains, blinds and mirrors have their own services: curtain fitting, blind fitting and mirror fitting.

02Plasterboard

How Do You Hang Pictures on Plasterboard?

It depends on the weight:

  • Light pictures: Traditional picture hooks with hardened steel pins, driven in at an angle, hold well in plasterboard. The packet gives the weight each hook takes.
  • Medium pictures: Self-drill plasterboard anchors or metal cavity fixings.
  • Heavy artwork: Fixed into the timber or metal studs behind the board, or onto heavy-duty spring toggles.

Using two hooks rather than one keeps a picture level and spreads the load. For valuable pieces, we can use security hangers that lock the frame to the wall. We check for cables and pipes before every hole.

03Gallery walls

How Do You Hang a Gallery Wall?

A gallery wall looks effortless when it has been planned:

  1. 1

Lay it out: arrange the frames on the floor until the group works.

  2. 2

Make paper templates: cut paper to each frame's size, mark the hanging point, and tape the templates to the wall.

  3. 3

Set the spacing: keep the gaps even, typically 5 to 8 cm between frames.

  4. 4

Set the height: centre the whole group at roughly eye level, typically around 150 cm from the floor, or a little above a sofa or sideboard.

  5. 5

Hang from the centre out: start with the main piece and work outwards, checking level as we go.

04Heavy shelves

What Fixings Do I Need for Heavy Shelves?

A shelf holds only as much as its weakest part: the wall, the fixing, the bracket or the shelf itself.

WallFixing for heavy shelves
Solid brick or blockWall plugs with screws long enough to pass through the plaster into solid masonry, sized for the load
PlasterboardScrews into the studs behind the board, or heavy-duty metal cavity fixings for moderate loads
Lath and plasterFixed into the timber studs behind; the plaster alone is not strong enough
AlcoveTimber battens fixed to the back and side walls, with the shelf resting on them

For bookshelves and heavy storage, twin-slot rail systems spread the load across several fixings down the wall, and the brackets can be adjusted later.

05Floating shelves

Floating Shelves

Floating shelves hide their support inside the shelf, usually on metal rods or a concealed bracket. That means all the load acts on a few fixings at the back, so they need a solid wall or studs. On plasterboard without studs in the right place, floating shelves suit light decorative items only. Long floating shelves need extra support points along their length.

09FAQs

Hanging and Fitting FAQs

Ask a different question
Q01

How do you hang pictures on plasterboard?

Light pictures go on angled picture hooks with hardened pins, medium ones on plasterboard anchors, and heavy artwork into the studs or onto heavy-duty toggles.

Q02

How much does it cost to put up shelves?

It depends on the number and type of shelves, their size and load, the wall and any extras. We usually give a fixed price after seeing photos.

Q03

What fixings do I need for heavy shelves?

Plugs and long screws into solid masonry, screws into the studs on plasterboard, or timber battens in alcoves. Rail shelving spreads heavy loads across more fixings.

Q04

How do you hang a gallery wall?

Lay the frames out on the floor, tape paper templates to the wall, keep even gaps, centre the group at eye level and hang from the centre out.

Q05

Can floating shelves hold heavy items?

Only on a solid wall or fixed into studs, with a strong concealed bracket. On plasterboard alone, they suit light items only.

Q06

Can you fill the holes from old fixings?

Yes. Our decorating team fills and makes good old holes, and can paint the wall to match.
