Mirror Hanging and Fitting

A large mirror is heavy glass: if it comes off the wall, it can injure someone as well as break. Our mirror hanging service fixes your mirror straight, at the right height and on fixings rated for its weight. We cover mirror fitting for every room, including heavy mirror hanging and bathroom mirror installation.

Mirror fitting is part of our handyman services. For pictures, artwork and shelves, see our hanging and fitting services.

01Methods

How Mirrors Are Fixed

The fixing depends on the mirror, its weight and the wall:

MethodHow it worksSuits
D-rings or hanging plateRings or plates on the back of the frame hang on screws or hooks in the wallFramed mirrors of light to medium weight
French cleat (hanging rail)Two interlocking angled rails, one on the mirror and one on the wall, spread the load along the widthHeavy and large framed mirrors
Mirror clipsSmall clips hold the edges of the glass to the wallFrameless mirrors
Mirror screws with capsScrews through pre-drilled holes in the glass, with decorative capsFrameless mirrors supplied with holes
Mirror adhesiveA specialist adhesive bonds the back of the mirror to a sound, flat surfaceFrameless mirrors where no fixings should show

Hanging a heavy mirror on a single picture hook or a length of wire is how most mirrors fall. We use two or more fixings, or a rail, so the load is shared.

02Plasterboard

How Do You Hang a Heavy Mirror on Plasterboard?

We find the studs behind the board with a detector and fix the cleat or hanging rail across at least two of them. Where the studs are not where the mirror needs to go, we use heavy-duty metal cavity fixings, such as spring toggles, rated for the load and spread across several points. For very heavy mirrors, timber supports can be added behind the board. Tell us the mirror's weight before we visit so we bring the right fixings.

03Height

How High Should a Mirror Be Hung?

A common guide is to hang a wall mirror so its centre is at roughly eye level, typically around 150 to 160 cm from the floor. Over a basin, the mirror is set so the users can see their faces comfortably, clear of the taps and splashback. Above a fireplace, console table or chest of drawers, the bottom of the mirror sits typically 15 to 25 cm above the top. We mark the position with you before we drill.

Bathroom Mirror Installation

Can You Hang a Mirror on Tiles?

Yes. We mark the holes on masking tape, drill slowly with a tile or diamond bit without hammer action, and push the wall plug past the tile into the wall behind, so the plug does not crack the tile as it expands. Frameless mirrors on tiles can also be fixed with mirror adhesive. If a tile does crack, we can replace it through our replacing cracked or chipped tiles service.

Mirror Cabinets

A mirror cabinet is heavy once it is full, so it needs fixings into masonry or studs, not plasterboard plugs alone.

Illuminated and Heated Mirrors

LED, demister-pad and shaver-socket mirrors need an electrical supply. Electrical work in a bathroom must suit the zone around the bath or shower, and the mirror needs a suitable IP rating. The hanging is done by our handyman team; any new electrical work is carried out by our domestic electrical installation team, and notifiable work is certified through one of the routes the building regulations allow. If you are refitting the whole room, see our bathroom renovation service.

05Adhesive

Mirror Adhesive or Mechanical Fixings?

Ordinary glues and some silicones can attack the silver backing and leave dark marks, so frameless mirrors are bonded with a mirror adhesive made for the purpose. The wall must be sound, clean and flat; adhesive on wallpaper only holds as well as the paper. A bonded mirror is very hard to remove without breaking it or damaging the wall, so for larger mirrors we usually combine adhesive with clips or a support at the bottom edge.

06Wardrobes

Wardrobe and Door Mirrors

Full-length mirrors on wardrobe or bedroom doors are fixed with mirror clips, screws or adhesive pads, depending on the door. We check that the hinges can take the extra weight first. Safety-backed mirror glass, which holds the pieces together if it breaks, is a sensible choice on doors and in children's rooms.

Mirror Hanging FAQs

Ask a different question
Q01

How do you hang a heavy mirror on plasterboard?

We fix a hanging rail or French cleat into at least two studs behind the board. Where there are no studs in the right place, we use heavy-duty metal cavity fixings rated for the weight.

Q02

How much does it cost to hang a mirror?

It depends on the size and weight, the fixing method, the wall and any extras. We usually give a fixed price after seeing a photo.

Q03

How high should a mirror be hung?

Typically with its centre at eye level, around 150 to 160 cm from the floor, or with the bottom typically 15 to 25 cm above furniture or a fireplace.

Q04

Can you hang a mirror on tiles?

Yes. We drill slowly with a tile bit and set the plug past the tile into the wall, or bond frameless mirrors with mirror adhesive.

Q05

Can a mirror be stuck to the wall with adhesive?

Yes, using a mirror adhesive that will not damage the silver backing, on a sound, flat surface. Larger mirrors are usually given clips or a bottom support as well.
