Curtain Pole Fitting

A sagging pole or a track pulling out of the plaster comes down to how it was fitted. Our curtain pole fitting service puts up poles, rails and tracks level, at the right height and on fixings that hold the weight of your curtains. We also cover curtain rail installation and curtain track fitting, including bay windows and ceiling-fixed tracks.

Curtain fitting is part of our handyman services. If you would rather have blinds, see our blind fitting service.

01Poles or tracks

Curtain Poles, Rails and Tracks

OptionWhat it isSuits
Curtain poleA visible pole on end brackets, with rings or eyelet curtains and finialsStraight windows where the pole is part of the look
Curtain track (rail)A slim metal or plastic track with gliders, often cordedBay windows, very wide windows, and a neat, hidden finish
Ceiling-fixed trackA track fixed to the ceiling instead of the wallRooms with little wall above the window, and full-height curtains
Bay poleA pole with angled joints and passing bracketsBay windows where you want a pole rather than a track

The plugs and screws supplied with a pole are often not right for your wall, so we use fixings that suit the wall and the weight.

02Height and width

How High Should a Curtain Pole Be?

A common guide is to fit the pole typically 10 to 15 cm above the top of the window frame, and to extend it typically 15 to 25 cm past each side. The curtains then stack back off the glass, letting in more light. Where the ceiling is close, we use a ceiling-fixed track.

We measure before we drill:

  • Width: The pole or track length, from the window width plus the stack-back each side.
  • Drop: From the bottom of the rings or gliders to just above the sill, or just above the floor for full-length curtains.
  • Overlap: On corded tracks, the centre arms overlap so the curtains meet without a gap.

03Fixings

Can You Fit a Curtain Rail to Plasterboard?

Yes, but plasterboard alone holds only light curtains. For anything heavier we fix into the timber or metal studs behind the board, use heavy-duty cavity fixings, or fit a timber batten across the studs first and fix the brackets to that.

Other walls need their own approach:

  • Concrete lintels: Drilled with a masonry bit, with plugs and screws sized for the load.
  • Steel lintels: Common above windows in newer homes. We fix above or beside the lintel, onto a batten spanning it, or drill the steel with metal bits and use suitable screws, depending on the lintel.
  • Lath and plaster: Found in older homes; we fix into the timber behind so the plaster does not crack or come away.

The strip close to the ceiling is one of the zones where electric cables are allowed to run, so we always check with a detector before drilling high on a wall.

04Bay windows

How Do You Fit Curtain Track in a Bay Window?

A bay track is bent to follow the shape of the bay, then fixed to the wall or ceiling with brackets close to each corner and along each straight run, set far enough out for the curtains to clear handles and sills. A bay pole is joined with angled elbow joints, and passing brackets let the rings slide past the supports. We template the bay first so the bends land in the right place.

05Heavy curtains

Heavy, Blackout and Interlined Curtains

Blackout, thermal and interlined curtains are much heavier than unlined ones. They need a stronger pole or track, fixings into solid material, and a centre bracket on long runs so the pole does not bow.

09FAQs

Curtain Fitting FAQs

Ask a different question
Q01

How much does it cost to fit a curtain pole?

It depends on the number and length of poles, the type, the wall and the weight of the curtains. We usually give a fixed price after seeing photos of the windows.

Q02

How high should a curtain pole be?

Typically 10 to 15 cm above the window frame, extending 15 to 25 cm past each side so the curtains stack back off the glass.

Q03

Can you fit a curtain rail to plasterboard?

Yes. Light curtains can go on cavity fixings; heavier ones need fixing into the studs or onto a timber batten.

Q04

How do you fit curtain track in a bay window?

The track is bent to follow the bay and fixed with brackets close to each corner and along each run, set far enough out to clear the window handles.

Q05

Should I choose a curtain pole or a track?

A pole suits a straight window where you want it on show. A track is neater, follows a bay and can be fixed to the ceiling.

Q06

What if there is a steel lintel above my window?

We fix above or beside it, onto a timber batten, or drill the steel with metal bits, depending on the lintel.
