EV Charger Installation

A dedicated charge point is quicker and safer than a household socket, and lets you charge overnight on a cheaper tariff. Good EV charger installation means checking your supply and earthing, running a dedicated circuit, notifying the network operator and setting the charger up correctly. We carry out home EV charger installation for houses with off-street parking, and EV charging point installation for workplaces and car parks.

Electric car charger installation is part of our electrician services.

01Choosing a charger

Choosing a Home EV Charger

  • Power: Most home chargers are typically 7 kW on a normal single-phase supply. Faster chargers (typically 11 kW or 22 kW) need a three-phase supply, which few homes have.
  • Tethered or untethered: A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, so you just plug in. An untethered charger has a socket, so you use your own cable; it looks neater and suits households with more than one type of car.
  • Connector: Most current cars use a Type 2 connector for home charging; we check your car before you order.
  • Solar-compatible chargers: Some, such as the Zappi, can use surplus solar electricity (see below).

02Smart charging

The Smart Charging Regulations

Under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, new home and workplace charge points sold for installation in Great Britain must have smart functionality. The charger must be able to send and receive information, respond to signals to change when or how fast it charges, meet security requirements, and come with default settings that avoid peak times, which you can override. We set up the app and your charging schedule at handover.

03The installation

What EV Charger Installation Involves

A Dedicated Circuit

A charger draws a high current for hours at a time, so it needs its own circuit from the consumer unit, with the correct cable size and RCD protection (either built into the charger or in the consumer unit). A new circuit is notifiable work, so it is certified through one of the routes the building regulations allow. If your consumer unit is old or full, it may need replacing through our domestic electrical installation service first.

Earthing and PME

Most UK homes have a PME (TN-C-S) earthing arrangement. If the supply's combined neutral and earth failed, a car connected outdoors could become dangerous to touch. Many chargers include built-in open-PEN fault protection; otherwise a separate earth rod may be needed. We check your earthing at the survey.

Supply Capacity and Load Management

We check your main fuse and existing load. Where the supply is limited, a load-management sensor slows the charger when the house is using a lot of power.

Notifying the DNO

The distribution network operator (DNO), which is UK Power Networks in London, must be notified when a charger is installed. Sometimes the DNO must approve it first, for example where the supply is shared with a neighbour (a looped supply) or the main fuse needs upgrading. We handle the notification or application.

04Position

Where Can the Charger Go?

The charger is usually mounted on an outside wall beside the driveway or in a garage, where the cable reaches the car's charging port without stretching. We also consider the cable route, wifi signal and cable storage.

You need off-street parking. Trailing a charging cable across a public pavement creates a trip hazard and is not allowed unless the council has approved a scheme, such as cable channels, for your street. If you have the space for a driveway but no off-street parking yet, our driveways service can build one; a dropped kerb needs approval from your council.

05Permission

Do I Need Permission to Install an EV Charger?

Usually not, for a house with off-street parking. A wall-mounted charger or charging post in an off-street parking area is normally permitted development in England, within limits on size and position. However:

  • Listed buildings: Listed building consent is normally needed.
  • Conservation areas and Article 4 areas: Extra limits can apply, so check with the council.
  • Flats and rented homes: You need permission from the freeholder or landlord, and the parking space must be yours to use.

The DNO must still be notified, and the circuit must meet the building regulations.

06Grants

Is There a Grant for EV Charger Installation?

There are government grants for EV chargepoints, but they are aimed at specific groups: renters and flat owners with off-street parking, landlords, and businesses installing workplace chargers. The grant for most homeowners living in houses closed in 2022. The schemes are run by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), and the grant is claimed through an installer authorised under the scheme, not by you.

Eligibility changes, so check the current schemes on GOV.UK, and ask us before you order whether your installation can be made under a grant scheme.

07Workplace

Workplace and Commercial Charge Points

For offices, shops, car parks and blocks of flats, EV charging point installation usually means several chargers on a shared, often three-phase, supply, with load management and access controls. Larger sites may need a supply upgrade from the DNO. The electrical side of a site fit-out is covered by our commercial electrical installation service.

08Solar

Charging From Solar Panels

If you have, or plan, solar panel installation, a solar-compatible charger can top up the car with electricity you would otherwise export, and the wiring and DNO paperwork can be planned together.

09Cost

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Home EV Charger?

We give you a written quote, usually a fixed price, after a survey or photos. The EV charger installation cost depends on:

  1. 01

The charger you choose, and whether you supply it.

  2. 02

    The cable run

The distance from the consumer unit to the charger, and whether cables go through walls, under floors or underground.

  3. 03

    The consumer unit

Whether it has space and suitable protection, or needs upgrading.

  4. 04

    Earthing

Whether an earth rod is needed.

  5. 05

    Supply

Load management, or a DNO upgrade if the main fuse or a looped supply needs changing.

Timescale · 10

How Long Does EV Charger Installation Take?

A straightforward installation, with the consumer unit close to the parking space, is quickest. Long or underground cable runs, a consumer unit upgrade, an earth rod or DNO approval add to the timescale. We confirm the timing when we quote.

11Process

How It Works

If an existing charger stops working, our electrical repair services can trace the fault.

Of the consumer unit, main fuse, meter and parking space.

  2. 02

    Written quote

The charger, cable route, earthing and any DNO approval needed.

  3. 03

    Install

The circuit is run and the charger mounted and connected.

  4. 04

    Test and certify

The circuit is tested and certified, and the DNO notified.

13FAQs

EV Charger FAQs

Ask a different question
Q01

How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?

It depends on the charger, the cable run, the consumer unit, earthing and any supply upgrade. We give you a written quote, usually at a fixed price.

Q02

Is there a grant for EV charger installation?

Yes, for some people: government grants cover renters and flat owners with off-street parking, landlords and businesses. They are claimed through an authorised installer; check GOV.UK for current eligibility.

Q03

Do I need permission to install an EV charger?

Usually not for a house with off-street parking, as it is normally permitted development. Listed buildings, some conservation areas, flats and rented homes need consent, and the DNO must always be notified.

Q04

How long does EV charger installation take?

It depends on the cable run, the consumer unit, earthing and whether DNO approval is needed. We confirm the timing when we quote.

Q05

Can I charge my electric car from a normal plug socket?

Occasionally, with the manufacturer's cable, but it is slow and loads the socket heavily for hours. A dedicated charger is safer for regular charging.

Q06

Can I have a charger without a driveway?

Not if the cable would cross a public pavement, unless your council has approved a scheme for your street. You need off-street parking, or you can use public chargers.
