Bathroom Plumbing

Not every bathroom job needs a full renovation. Sometimes you just need a new toilet, a better shower, a replacement basin, or a leak fixed behind the bath panel. Our bathroom plumber service covers the fixtures and pipework: fitting, replacing, moving and repairing toilets, basins, baths and showers, with the supply pipes and wastes to match.

Bathroom plumbing is part of our plumbing services. If you want the whole room stripped out and refitted, see our bathroom renovation service.

01Toilets

Toilet Installation and Repairs

Yes, a plumber can fit a toilet, and it is one of the most common bathroom jobs. We fit and replace:

  • Close-coupled toilets: The cistern sits directly on the pan. The most common type.
  • Back-to-wall toilets: The cistern is hidden in a unit or boxed-in wall, with only the pan visible.
  • Wall-hung toilets: The pan is fixed to the wall on a concealed frame, leaving the floor clear underneath.
  • Toilet repairs: A cistern that keeps running, a weak or broken flush, a leaking pan connector, or a toilet that rocks.

A new toilet must line up with the soil pipe, so we check the outlet position before you buy. Moving a toilet to a new position depends on getting the waste to the soil stack with enough fall. Where that is not possible, for example in a basement or loft, a Saniflo installation may be the answer.

02Showers

Shower Installation

The right shower depends on your hot water system, so we check that first:

Shower typeHow it worksBest for
Mixer shower (thermostatic)Mixes hot and cold water from your system, holding a steady temperatureCombi boilers and unvented cylinders with good mains pressure
Electric showerHeats cold mains water inside the unitA second shower, or when the boiler cannot supply one. Needs its own electrical circuit
Power showerA mixer with a built-in pump to boost flowGravity-fed systems with a cold tank in the loft only
Digital showerAn electronic valve, often with a remote controlModern installations where the valve can be hidden

Pumps must never be fitted to a combi boiler or directly to the mains supply. An electric shower's new circuit is notifiable, so it is installed and certified through our domestic electrical installation service.

We fit shower valves exposed on the wall or concealed behind the tiles, over baths or in enclosures and walk-in showers. Before the valve is tiled in, we pressure-test the connections.

03Basins and baths

Basins, Baths and Taps

  • Basins: Pedestal, wall-hung, semi-recessed and vanity basins, with new taps, traps and pop-up wastes.
  • Baths: Replacing a bath with new taps, waste and overflow, and a new panel. The joint between the bath and the wall is finished with siliconing.
  • Taps: Replacing dripping taps or fitting new mixer taps, including checking that low-pressure taps suit your system.

04Pipework and wastes

Waste Pipes, Water Pressure and Regulations

Good bathroom plumbing is mostly about what you cannot see:

  • Waste pipes: Each fitting needs a waste of the right size with enough fall. Typically 32 mm for basins, 40 mm for baths and showers, and 110 mm for toilets. Every waste has a trap to stop drain smells.
  • Water pressure and flow: Low pressure often comes from old, narrow pipes, a partly closed valve or the type of system. We check before recommending a shower or taps.
  • Water regulations: Fittings and installation must meet the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. That includes isolation valves on each fitting, so it can be turned off without shutting off the whole house, and protection against backflow.
  • Hot water safety: In new homes, hot water to a new bath must be limited to 48°C. We recommend thermostatic valves in any home with children or older people.

If you notice damp patches, loose tiles or a musty smell near the bath or shower, water may be escaping behind the tiles. Our leak detection and pipe repairs service can find it, and our sealing tile joints for waterproofing service can reseal the tiling.

How Long Does Bathroom Plumbing Take?

Replacing like for like, such as a toilet, basin or tap in the same place, is the quickest. Moving fittings, concealing a shower valve or fitting a wall-hung toilet takes longer, because new pipework is run and walls may need boxing in and tiling. If it is your only toilet, we plan the work so it is out of use for as short a time as possible. We confirm the timing when we quote.

Bathroom Plumbing FAQs

Ask a different question
Q01

How much does a plumber charge to fit a bathroom?

It depends on what is being fitted, whether fittings move, the type of shower, access and making good. For a defined job we can usually give a fixed price after seeing the bathroom or photos.

Q02

How much does it cost to install a shower?

It depends on the shower type, whether your water system suits it, whether the valve is exposed or concealed, and any new pipework, electrics or tiling. We check your system first and give you a written quote.

Q03

Can a plumber fit a toilet?

Yes. We fit close-coupled, back-to-wall and wall-hung toilets, and check that the new pan lines up with the soil pipe before you buy.

Q04

How long does bathroom plumbing take?

Like-for-like replacements are quickest. Moving fittings, concealed valves and wall-hung toilets take longer. We confirm the timing when we quote.

Q05

Which shower is best for a combi boiler?

Usually a thermostatic mixer shower, as long as the mains pressure and flow are good. Power showers with pumps must not be fitted to a combi boiler.

Q06

Can I supply my own toilet or shower?

Yes. We can fit fittings you have bought. Send us the model first, so we can check it suits your water system and waste position.
