Bathroom Renovations

A bathroom renovation replaces your bathroom or shower room from the walls out. The old suite and tiles come out, the pipework, waterproofing and electrics are brought up to date, and your new bathroom is fitted, tiled and finished. Because a bathroom involves plumbers, electricians, tilers and decorators, we manage every trade as one job, with one team and one quote.

We carry out bathroom renovations and new bathroom installations as part of our renovations and refurbishments service. If you only need a toilet, basin or shower replaced, see our bathroom plumbing service.

01What is included

What Is Included in a Bathroom Renovation?

  • Strip-out: Removing the old suite, tiles and flooring, and disposing of the waste.
  • Preparation: Repairing walls and floors, and boarding with moisture-resistant or cement-based boards where needed.
  • Waterproofing: Tanking the shower area and wet zones before tiling, so water cannot reach the walls and floor.
  • Plumbing: New supply pipes, wastes and valves, positioned for your new layout.
  • Electrics: Bathroom-rated lighting, an extractor fan, a shaver socket and any electric shower circuit through our domestic electrical installation service.
  • Heating: A heated towel rail through our radiator installation and replacement service, or electric underfloor heating installation.
  • Tiling: Walls and floors through our kitchen and bathroom tiling service, with joints sealed through our sealing tile joints for waterproofing service.
  • Fitting the suite: Bath, shower, basin, toilet, vanity unit and accessories.
  • Finishing: siliconing around the bath, tray and basin, then decorating.

You can supply your own suite and tiles, or we can help you choose them.

02Options

Bathroom Layouts and Options

  • Walk-in shower or wet room: A level-access shower, which needs careful falls and full waterproofing of the floor.
  • Bath with shower over: A practical family choice, with a screen and tiled surround.
  • Shower room: Replacing the bath with a large shower enclosure.
  • En-suite: A new shower room in a bedroom, loft or basement. Where the waste cannot drain by gravity, a Saniflo installation may be used.
  • Accessible bathroom: Level-access showers, grab rails and higher toilets.

03Building regulations

Do You Need Building Regulations for a New Bathroom?

Not usually, if you are replacing a bathroom like for like in the same place. You will need approval or certification for parts of the work if the renovation includes:

  • Electrical work: New circuits, including electric showers, and additions or alterations to circuits in the bathroom zones are notifiable and must be certified.
  • Ventilation: A new bathroom needs mechanical extraction to the outside.
  • Drainage: New or altered connections to the soil stack or drains.
  • Structural work: Moving walls, or cutting into floor joists for pipes and wastes.
  • A bathroom where there was none before: For example, turning a bedroom into a bathroom or adding an en-suite.
  • Hot water: An unvented hot water cylinder must be installed by someone qualified to fit it.

We make sure every part of the bathroom that needs approval or a certificate is covered.

04Waterproofing

Why Waterproofing Matters

Most bathroom leaks are not from pipes. They come from water getting through grout and failed sealant into the wall or floor behind. That can rot floors, damage ceilings below and loosen tiles. We tank shower areas and wet zones before tiling, seal every junction, and test the plumbing before the walls are closed up. If you already have signs of a leak, our leak detection and pipe repairs service can find the cause first.

How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Take?

A like-for-like replacement is the quickest. Moving the layout, creating a wet room or adding a bathroom where there was none takes longer. Waterproofing, adhesive and grout all need time to set, so tiling cannot be rushed. We confirm the programme in your quote, and if it is your only bathroom, we plan the work to keep the time without a toilet as short as possible.
